Schedule Annual Maintenance →A salt bridge is a crust that forms in the salt tank, preventing water from reaching the salt. It's the #1 reason softeners stop working — and most homeowners don't realize it's happening.
When salt dissolves unevenly or moisture gets into the salt tank, a hard crust can form on the sides of the tank. This "bridge" holds up the salt above it, but the water below can't dissolve the salt at the bottom. The system then runs on empty brine and regenerates with no effect.
Simply drop a pencil or broom handle into the salt tank. If it hits a hard surface 6–12 inches down but you can see salt at the bottom, you have a salt bridge. We can break it in under 5 minutes during a maintenance visit.
